Fifth generation Napa natives, John and Maggy began the Kongsgaard wine endeavor planting the Judge vineyard to Chardonnay in the 1970s on family land in the hills east of Napa. 1996 was the inaugural vintage. Our son Alex and Evan Frazier, both winemakers, joined the partnership a decade later. Our production, limited to what Alex, Evan and John can make with their own hands, is primarily our two Chardonnays–The Judge and the Napa Valley bottling. We also make small quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, and minuscule amounts of Viognier, Sauvignon blanc, and Albariño in our cave on the eastern rim of Napa Valley. Our intensely farmed, shy-bearing vineyards and our archaic, low-intervention winemaking produce powerful, graceful wines–vivid expressions of vineyard and variety.

Winemaker Notes 2022 Kongsgaard Chardonnay
Our historic blend of the Hudson and Hyde vineyards is augmented in 2022 with fruit from the spectacular Coombsville estate planted by Warren Winiarski for a wine of both energy and opulence. In line with the previous bottlings, the wine is defined by the tension of citrus and honeyed aromas over a vibrant, saline, mineral finish.

‘Bindi’, 50 kilometres northwest of Melbourne in the Macedon Ranges, is the family property of the Dhillon family. Originally purchased in the 1950s as part of the larger grazing farm ‘Bundaleer’, ‘Bindi’ is a 170-hectare farm of which 7 hectares are planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Fifteen hectares are dedicated to managed plantation eucalypts for high-grade furniture timber whilst the remainder of the land is maintained as remnant bushland and important indigenous grasslands.
The Bindi vineyard is the fundamental focus of our endeavours. Their vineyard and winemaking philosophy is to seek balance and purity in the expression of our various individual vineyard sites and this philosophy is applied to farming and conservation at ‘Bindi’; the preservation of the natural harmony.

The Javallier story started in Meursault, after the war in 1945 when Raymond Javillier decided to cultivate 2 ha. of plots which had always belonged to the family. The turning point for the estate was in 1974: Patrick received his diploma in wine studies (Diplôme National d’Oenologie) and his father handed over the estate with full responsibility for the harvest and wine-making process. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, the estate acquired new plots and the addition of land which belonged to the family of his wife, Catherine. In 2005, Marion, the elder daughter of Patrick, joined the domain after studies in management and winegrowing with the responsibility for sales and the winemaking process of the red wines. In 2011, Pierre-Emmanuel Lamy, the husband of Laurène (Marion’s sister) also joined the domain, in charge of the fieldwork and winemaking process of the white wines. Today, Marion and Pierre-Emmanuel are the third generation to benefit from and develop the family tradition. Javallier makes some of the finest white wines in Burgundy.

In 2002, Eric Sussman established Radio-Coteau, focusing on the north coast vineyards of western Sonoma County and Anderson Valley. With their benchland locations, well-drained soils, exposure to capricious marine air and fog, these sites host grapes naturally suited to their surrounding elements. The Domaine Morey-Coffinet, resulting from the meeting of the vines of two tutelary figures of Chassagne-Montrachet, Marc Morey and Fernand Coffinet, has today an impressive wine-making heritage, grouping several of the best soils of the famous municipality of the Golden Triangle from the Côte de Beaune: In Cailleret, La Romanée, Blanchot-Dessus, Dent de Chien in Chassagne, the mythical Pucelles in Puligny … without forgetting, of course, the famous Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet. Thibault Morey and his father Michel have committed the conversion into Bio of the 5.5 hectares planted with Chardonnay and 3 Ha of Pinot Noir (certified in 2018), vines that were already grown in the fight against aging since the beginning of the 2000s. They do not stop there because, along with some friends, they have also adopted the principles of bio-dynamism.
They are precise, and rigorous wines.
