The "Poderi Aldo Conterno" winery is situated in Bussia of Monforte d'Alba which is the heart of the Barolo wine area. The estate, which vinifies exclusively its own grapes, consists of 25 hectares of vineyard. Most of the soil, which is at an altitude of 350 - 400 m. above the sea level, is located South / South - West and is composed of clayey marls and limestone with layers of sand. The yields per hectare are very low and the total production is about 90.000 bottles a year. The harvest begins in mid September and done exclusively by hand with a very careful selection of the picked grapes. Always following a strict family tradition, red wines are neither clarified nor filtered. They are regarded as one of the finest producers in Piedmont.

Brendan arrived in Adelaide in 2010 after working a stint at Veuve Clicquot. A good few years working in retail shops in Brisbane instilled in him a love for wine, and after an extended visit to Champagne, the quixotic desire to make his own wines took hold of him. In our stable of wines exclusive to KWM, Poggio Al Sole is like a favourite child; no one wants to admit they have one but secretly loves one just a little bit more. Poggio al Sole lies in the heart of Tuscany, in the bucolic countryside between Florence and Siena, between Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti. Documents in the archives of the nearby ancient abbey of Badia a Passignano testify to the claim that wine and olive oil were produced on this estate as early as the 12th century. Giovanni and Kathrin Davaz are the proprietors of Poggio al Sole, tending approximately 18 hectares of vineyards. The vines face south-east to south-west and are between 320 and 480 metres above sea level. Yields are kept low to improve quality, and the vineyards are certified organic.

Although its location, its terroir and its reputation largely deserved to be included in the 1855 classification, the Toulouse-Lautrec family, owners of Siran, legitimists and faithful to their family tradition, had declined the invitation to be included in this “Bonapartist classification”. At one time classified Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel alongside the châteaux Phélan-Ségur, Haut-Marbuzet, Chasse-Spleen, Château Siran is now charting its own unique and singular path on the road to excellence. There have been ownership changes as one would expect from a winery that is 165 years old. In 2007, Édouard Miailhe took over the reins of the estate from his parents ( who also own Châteaux Palmer, Pichon-Lalande and Ormes de Pez). He has undertaken very important investments to restructure and modernize the vineyard, the vat room, the arrival of the harvest, the aging cellar, the tasting rooms, the shop and the cellar. These considerable efforts allow Siran today to fully assume its place as one of the assimilated Classified Growths of 1855.
