About the Mr. George Legacy Collection
"George Urquhart, or ‘Mr George’ as he was known, joined his father, John at the family business ninety years ago in 1933 and became a key advocate of single malt whisky at a time when most whisky went into blends. ‘The father of single malt’ as he’s been called, Mr George was a firm believer in the importance of guiding principles, passed down to future generations. The Third Edition in the Legacy range pays tribute to his beliefs and vision – and features whisky from our last ever cask from 1959."
Producer Description
"Distilled on 15th October 1959 and spending its entire maturation in cask no. 3665, a first fill Sherry butt, this Third Edition of the Mr George Legacy Series was bottled on 2nd November 2022 at a remarkable cask strength of 56.5% ABV. This whisky is from Gordon & MacPhail’s last cask – from any distillery – from 1959."

G&M Private Collection Benromach 1982
$3,599.99
This 39 year old Private Collection Benromach, bottled just shy of 40 years, was matured 19 years in a Sherry Cask before finishing for a further 20 years in a Burgundy Hogshead. At 60.2%, it has held its strength too. A sister cask to this bottling, also finished in Burgundy, is rocking 91pts on Whiskybase.
Independent bottlings of Benromach are extremely rare, there have been less than a dozen in the last 20 years, and a good chunk of them were by the distillery's owner Gordon & MacPhail. So why bottle a bunch of 39 year old Burgundy finished Benromachs (there appear to be at least 3) under Gordon & MacPhail? I suspect it is because these whiskies fall outside of the style the distillery is going for, and they didn't want to confuse these with the recent 40 year old releases, which have a more traditional style.

""This, the first release since the Machir Bay Evolution, is a peat lover’s dram through and through. Heavily peated, and bottled at cask strength; it hits hard and leaves its mark. That’s the magic of Islay whiskies under ten years: vibrant, fearless, and full of character. From powerful smoke and bright citrus to warm spices and fresh vanilla, every sip commands attention. Think of regular Machir Bay but turned up to full throttle."
