This Zuidam Distillery Single Malt Whisky was distilled 11/9/1998 and bottled. 3/9/2018 at 46%. A curiosity to be sure, with only 6 bottles are available for sale in Canada… Zuidam’s Millstone whisky is bottling some of the best sherried whisky around these days. And this is another fine example.
Andrew’s Tasting Note
Nose: dark bakers chocolate, Nestle’s Quick, musty oak, waxed leather sofas and sweet Cuban cigar tobacco; prune juice, licorice Fisherman’s Friends and polished oak shelves with dusty books.
Palate: Sunrype Fruit Source bars, dark chocolate brownies and more Nestle’s Quick; prune juice, grilled figs and orange rinds in a Sazerac cocktail; more sweet Cuban cigar tobacco, musty dunnage warehouse notes and polished oak shelves; rich but balanced spices and soft leather.
Finish: moving back towards licorice Fisherman’s Friends, leather and dark chocolate; sweet and drying with fading spices.
Comment: old school sherry, the sort you don’t often see anymore; Patricks sources excellent sherry casks; on the pricey side, but only 6 bottles are available for sale!

Produced by the Zuidam family distillery in Baarle-Nassau, Netherlands, this peated Millstone single malt whisky was aged entirely in PX Solera Sherry Casks. Bottled in small batches at 46% ABV.
Evan's Tasting Note
Nose: Rich Sherry notes along with wood and spice notes. Cloves, juniper, star anise, gingerbread, trail mix with raisins and walnuts, maple syrup, and an underlying potpourri and wood smoke.
Palate: The peat comes out more on the palate, with sweet notes from the PX Sherry and a lot of nuttiness. Toasted almonds, walnuts, dates, maple syrup again, earthy tobacco, fruit leather, amaretto, Frangelico, black licorice and Montreal steak spice.
Finish: The earthy smoke from the peat and nutty notes from the sherry linger together nicely.
Comment: This is big sherry with a decent amount of smoke, but very approachable. The spice notes and the smoke keep the PX Sherry influence from going overly sweet and decadent, which is surprising. This could have been over the top, but it finds a nice balance.
