This Single Grain Irish Whiskey from Teeling Whiskey Company was fully matured in California red wine barrels before being bottled at 46% ABV. This whiskey was awarded "World's Best Grain" at the 2014 World Whiskies Awards. 2016 Day 11 Whisk(e)y in the KWM Whisky Advent Calendar.
Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: double caramel corn, brandy filled chocolates, silky honey and pure vanilla extract; soft earthy tones, crisp but gentle spice and subtle leather; easily identifiable as a grain whiskey, but not sharp or rough.
Palate: huge caramel notes, butterscotch and creme brule; more caramel corn, white chocolate and mixed berries smothered in whipped cream; fruits become darker and more jammy, with more crisp but delicate spice and soft leather; waxy Strawberry Twizzlers.
Finish: light but long; warming and full of character: more berry fruits, Straberry Twizzlers and slowly fading spices.
Comment: this is probably the most unusual whisk(e)y in the 2016 KWM Whisky Advent Calendar, but it is very pleasant and full of character. An unusual grain!
Producer's Tasting Note
Nose: Spice and fruit notes mingle with an underlying sweet nose.
Taste: Strong spice at the start developing into lush red berries and grapes, with drying tannin effect at the end.
Finish: Dry finish dominated by wood and spice.

This whiskey is a tribute to 100 years of the Ryan Family at their famous Beggars Bush pub on Haddington Road, in Dublin’s Ballsbridge. Bottled at 46%, this 12 year old Irish single malt is sourced from casks produced at the Cooley distillery. Matured in Ex-Bourbon barrels.
About the Producer: "There’s been a pub on the site for at least 200 years. Thomas Ryan became proprietor in 1913, the eve of World War and of Ireland’s independence. He was a traditional vintner and whiskey man – sourcing, maturing, finishing and bottling his own Ryan’s Malt, a firm favourite among discerning locals in The Bush and the other Ryan houses.
"Thomas handed on the pub, and Ryan’s Malt, to his son Jack, born to the trade. Jack maintained the whiskey tradition into the ’40’s, when the near demise of the whole Irish whiskey business forced a pause.
"The Ryans still own and run The Bush, and have revived the family’s whiskey tradition. The Jack Ryan Beggars Bush 12 Year Old Single Malt won an Irish Whiskey Award in 2014. The Centenary 15 Year Old Single Barrel Cask Strength was released in 2015, and more small batches of premium single malts are planned; watch out for the Jack Ryan 15 Year Old Single Malt – The Bourdega."
