Following on the heels of Pauillac 18 y.o., we now have a new wine-finished Aberfeldy. The producers tell us that "Bolgheri wines are robust, full of dark fruit flavours (blackberry, dark cherry) with an intense oak finish." Should be a pretty vibrant mash-up with the Aberfeldy distillery character. And just the mention of cherries has us salivating.

In terms of age statements at least, the 21-year-old sits at the apex of the Aberfeldy family. It's no geriatric, to be sure, but a couple decades in oak has put this one firmly in beautiful, mature whisky territory. If we're being honest though, 40% seems a bit scrawny by today's standards. Despite that wee hangup, it's hard to argue that the flavour isn't spectacular. And if we're continuing with this whole honesty thing, the simple reality is that some whiskies are going to be a bit lighter (read: lower alcohol) but are still absolutely deserving of attention on the merits of intrinsic quality. This is just such a one.
