"Introducing... Orkney Sponge! Our mash up of the Whisky Sponge and Old Orkney brands because we're into that kind of fun and nonsense! Edition OO1 is a 1998 refill hogshead of 23 year old Highland Park. It has been bottled at natural cask strength of 57.0% and has a surprisingly peaty and almost old style HP profile with plenty dry herbal and medical notes with loads of coastal freshness. Just the style we adore from this, one of our favourite distilleries. Old Orkney was, of course, the brand associated with Stromness back before the distillery sadly closed in the 1920s. It was way ahead of its time in terms of funny and witty advertising and super elegant, cool branding. It has long been an inspiration for what we've tried to do with Sponge, which is why we went out of our way to buy the brand. Orkney Sponge is our first wee experiment at having some fun with Old Orkney."

“Nose: richly evocative with that signature Highland Park/Orcadian peaty tang. Lots of concentrated medicinal, herbal and coastal qualities intertwining with soft waxes and honeys. Just gorgeous! Palate: perfect at full cask strength, resinous, honeyd and syrupy in texture with soft underlying peat, citrus fruits, lightly smoky cereal notes and many coastal and medicinal complexities. Harks back to an older style of Highland Park. Finish: long, naturally sweet, herbaceous, richly oily and showing beautifully intricate peat smoke.” 89.75pts Whiskybase
