Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2013

$101.99

The 2022 edition of Bruichladdich's Islay Barley is a 2013 vintage release, produced from barley grown at 7 Islay farms in 2012. The whisky was matured 8 years in ex-American and European oak casks before bottling at 50%.

Producer Description

"For almost two decades now, we have shown the permanence of our commitment to barley provenance. Aided by the determination of our farming partners, this Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2013 is our eighth edition of unpeated, locally grown single malt.

"While each expression from the individual growing season is subtly nuanced, a signature maritime-citrus, barley forward style has developed in these complex single malts.

"Our newest vintage of unpeated Bruichladdich Islay Barley features the harvest from the 2012 growing season, later distilled in 2013.

"The crop was raised across seven island farms, by Hunter Jackson at Cruach, Andrew and Donald Jones at Coull, Mark French at Rockside, Ian McKerrell at Island, Alistair Torrance at Mulindry, Raymond Fletcher at Dunlossit and Raymond Stewart at Sunderland.

"The resulting spirit was matured in a combination of ex-American and ex-European oak casks for eight aged years."

Andrew's Tasting Note

Nose: fruity and malty with that classic Laddie funk, and a touch of salt; canteloupe, lemon, and dried apricot; barley sugars, Greek yogurt, and aged cheddar; heather honey, and a hit of potpourri.

Palate: soft, malty, and decadent, with more funk and a hit of sea salt; more cheddar than yogurt on the palate, but the honey is still there, as is the fruit: more canteloupe, apricot, and lemon... almost a little Limoncello; the barley is soft with a flinty minerality.

Finish: medium long, drying, and warm, with more malt, funk, and fruit.

Comment: at just 8 years of age, this spirit-driven whisky is quite simply gorgeous; Bruichladdich is continuing to distill one of the best spirits in Scotland, and it is at its finest when it is in refill casks, especially American oak; I find it at its best if you let it breathe a little!

Producer Tasting Note

Nose: The freshness and purity of the spirit is striking. A kaleidoscope of vibrant aromas pour from the glass. First, citrus and honey notes emerge before stoned fruit, dried apricot, and the perfume of ripe peaches. Sweet notes of marzipan, yellow flowers and vanilla pods are followed by zephyrs of spice, cereal, and marine breeze. Over time the oak notes elevate as the vanilla, Crème-Brulee, caramel and wood spices come to the fore. Then gentle hints of cinnamon and ginger cake and syrup add to the anticipation of tasting.

Palate: Oak cradles the soft fruit distillation beautifully. The delicate sweetness and luscious texture are like velvet on the palate. The balance of those sweet ripe stoned fruit flavours with the vanilla, caramel and brown sugar notes of the oak is perfect. This vintage of Islay barley is bottled at just the right moment to capture the essence of our island. Add a touch of water and watch as the natural oils react in the glass releasing wonderful floral notes of hawthorn and heather to add to the complexity and depth of this remarkable single malt.

Finish: The finish is a testament to the quality of distillation. The subtle marine tang paired with the sweet citrus and honeyed oaked notes tells the story of our whisky and where it comes from. Natural whisky with no chill filtration means you will experience a long and gentle a finish, and in this case - unforgettable.

94pts Whisky Advocate

"This expression, now in its eighth edition, showcases Bruichladdich’s commitment to Islay terroir. It’s an 8 year old in a world of double-digit age stated scotch, but you’ll never accuse this delightful whisky of being too young. Sweet biscuity aromas along with ripe peaches and pears lead to a creamy palate of lemon cake, candied orange, nougat and vanilla, all balanced by the wood influence and hints of salinity. Water brings out sweet nectar and honey. The finish is graceful, long, and lively, making this a truly memorable dram. —David Savona"
