Joh. Jos. Prüm needs no introduction to Riesling lovers, having already become a Mosel icon during the nearly five decades during which its namesake’s son Sebastien was in charge. Katharina Prüm has been active alongside her father, Manfred, since early in the new millennium, and the two of them perpetuate a house style that has itself become a Mosel archetype: wines of delicacy and restrained sweetness, often strongly marked in youth by yeasty and otherwise fermentative aromas, and tingling with dissolved CO2. Their longevity is legendary, and the Prüms personally don’t care to drink their own wines – even the Kabinetts – with less than a dozen, and usually many more, years in bottle. The aromas of youthful Prüm wines make it obvious that fermentation here is entirely spontaneous. Manfred makes no secret of his longstanding disinterest in legally dry wines.
750 mlThe Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard has become intrinsically attached to the name of Joh. Jos. Prüm. The Estate owns five hectares of this majestic site. It offers perfect growing conditions for the Riesling grape with its deep, weather-beaten grey slate soil, good water support, extreme steepness of up to 70 % gradient, and its optimal south-south-west exposure. Wehlener Sonnenuhr is named after the sundial erected in the vineyard in 1842 by Jodocus Prüm, an ancestor of J.J. Prüm. The wines of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr possess excellent structure, show beautiful, ripe aromas and flavors (typically stone fruits), a fine minerality, and great depth and length. After having been aged for some years, the harmony, finesse and expression of these wines is unique.

This wine is pressed from a large number of small vineyards at the foot of the Loibenberg. What they have in common is that they are still decisively shaped by the Loibenberg and its eroded weathered rock. There are influences of sand and various sediments found among the vineyards located in the warmest Wachau terraces with an arid and shallow soil lying 200 metres above sea level. They use traditional agriculture in the vineyard and, when the grape reaches its optimum ripeness, it is harvested manually.
Once the grapes reach the winery, they are selected, pressed and left to macerate for about 24 hours. They are then vinified at a controlled temperature with selected yeasts. No oak barrels are used in the process. When it is ready, the Alzinger Riesling Loibenberg Smaragd wine is clarified and filtered. Alzinger Riesling Loibenberg Smaragd is a dry white wine that contains all the delicacy and complexity of the charming Wachau Valley.

The Elisenberg vineyard was planted by Richter ancestor Franz Ludwig Niessen following the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 and was named after the late but still-popular Queen Louisa of Prussia. The vineyard land was given to the Richter family as recompense (and as a thank-you) after Niessen saved the region from being sacked by Napoleon’s army. The town of Veldenz is located at the southern end of the prehistoric Mosel riverbed, south of Mülheim. The vineyard faces south and enjoys a cooler microclimate than vineyards located closer to the Mosel River. The grey slate terroir has rich layers of quartz that create a special style of wine. The Elisenberg Rieslings features a very long growing season and are dominated by flavours of wild berries: red and black currant, blackberry and raspberry. A complex acid structure adds to the long-lived, refined and delicate character of these wines.

The current owner, Ernst “Erni” Loosen, assumed ownership in 1988, embarking on a quest to greatly improve the quality and international reputation of the estate, the Mosel region, and Riesling in general. Today, Erni is one of the most iconic and influential winemakers in the world. A full range of Riesling styles are produced, following the traditions of both family lines: dry wines from the paternal Loosen side, and Prädikat wines inspired by the maternal branch (the Prüm family) grown on steep slopes of the Middle Moselle.
