Cut/Point is an exciting new addition to the indie bottling game. The fine gent who launched this brand is not only a Keeper of the Quaich and long time whisky industry demi-god, he's also a local boy with his finger on the pulse 'round thses parts. In other words...Cut/Point may be new, but it's also already an old soul, and one that is easy to put stock in.
Benrinnes is a very hit or miss malt most of the time, but this particular cask is a real fireworks show. Cereal-forward with just enough cask influence to rein in the spirit. Refreshingly, left to be naked. It's a boozy, swaggering little beast in a style we don't see enough of. A bit challenging, and very retro.
Cask number 307387 was an ex-Bourbon Hogshead that yielded 298 bottles at 57.4%.

Curt's Tasting Note
Nose: Smells like a stillhouse. A slight pine-iness. Cinnamon. A very faint whiff of mandarin peel, poached pear, and satsuma. Vegetal, with a hint of that cheesy funk (and bung cloth or damp burlap) that often screams Benrinnes. Cachaca. Just a hint of juniper and coriander. Naked, unapologetic, and old school.
Palate: Nutty. Toasty malt notes. Weetabix. Horehound candy, before some tangy fruit notes build, then fade into a faint Ouzo note. Lots of spice (mostly cinnamon), and some some very odd - but brilliant - rambutan fruit notes. Dandelion greens.
Finish: More of those breakfast cereal notes (Weetabix, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Shredded Wheat). Cinnamon. Slighty tannic.

Gilles Dumangin doesn't make things easy on himself when he wraps his whiskies in wine. He has a habit of stacking the deck against himself by picking distilleries that boast some of the most challenging profiles in all of Scotch Whisky: Benrinnes, Ardmore, Fettercairn, Craigellachie. These aren't exactly the most mild-mannered of malts. It's a testament to the man's craft. I love the whole 'if you're going to swing, swing for the fences' mentality.
This Benrinnes spent 10 years in a Refill Hogshead before 23 months in Ratafia Champenois.

Excellent young Caol Ila from local darlings Cut/Point. This is brash and loud-mouthed young Caol Ila, make no mistake, but there's also a sort of hidden complexity here; not in the sense that it's tough to unravel, but more like there's a rather difficult balance being struck here. There's a lot of youth on display - which is great when drinking peated whisky, as youth generally equals big smokiness - but it drinks far from underripe. A style that perfectly suggests the aromas you'll encounter at the distillery.
