The 2020 Gigondas Les Routes comes from Serine Syrah (which is an older clone) and was 90% destemmed. The aging occurs all in barrique, and it spends 18 months in used barrels. It has some subtle oak as well as remarkable purity in its deep black fruits as well as notes of bacon fat, violets, and ground pepper. Big, ripe, sexy, and seamless, it’s one of the richer wines in the lineup, and I suspect the cellar will be your friend. This cuvée might be the finest Syrah coming from the Southern Rhône.
