No Pinot and no Chardonnay?!?! Believe it or not: Petit Meslier is the name of the grape in this Champagne from Laherte. This Extra-Brut Champagne comes from young vines of this nearly forgotten grape recently planted in 2014 and 2018. The grapes were picked at full maturity and this multi-vintage bubbly was aged on the lees for 6 months.
Petit Meslier is just being rediscovered as an important grape in the Champagne region, prized for its ability to keep acidity even in hotter growing seasons. It is seen in small amounts blended into some Champagne, but seeing a 100% Petit Meslier bottling like this one is rare indeed!
From Laherte Freres
"This forgotten grape is particularly close to our hearts and we decided to replant it, for its strong personality and to preserve the varietal diversity of Champagne. From the crossing of Gouais Blanc and Savagnin, it offers us rare and intense emotions."

Robertparker.com Tasting Note
90 points - William Kelley - "Based on the 2018 vintage, with some 40% reserve wines from 2017, the NV Extra-Brut Petit Meslier comes from young vines in Chavot. Offering up generous aromas of pear, honeyed orchard fruit, buttered toast and nuts, it's medium to full-bodied, with an impressively satiny attack for this variety and an unsurprisingly racy spine of acidity. It's more than just a curio."

Champagne Laherte was founded by Jean-Baptiste Laherte, who set up the family estate in 1889, planting most of the vines in the village of Chavot. The estate today comprises 11 hectares in three distinct areas of the champagne region: Coteaux Sud d’Epernay, Côte des Blancs and Vallée de la Marne.

Since 2005, Aurélien Laherte, the seventh generation, is giving a new dimension to the estate, while following in the footsteps of his father Thierry and his uncle Christian, the Laherte brothers. Laherte Freres provides a range of authentic, pure and unique champagne wines. While relying on the traditional trio of grapes Laherte Freres also has an old plot containing lost grape varietals that were once used centuries ago in champagne. Very unique with few other producers using all seven varietals.
Kensington Wine Market is privileged to be one of Champagne Laherte Frères' exclusive retail partners since 2013.
