Cognac-born consultant winemaker and viticulturist Olivier Rivière was lured to Spain in 2004 by Telmo Rodriguez to convert his vineyards to biodynamics. He ended up falling in love with the traditions and grapes of the country, and now farms 25 hectares of owned and contracted vineyards in Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja, Rioja Alavesa, and the up-and-coming DO of Arlanza. He is a terroirist at heart, with a focus on biodynamics honed by time working at Elian da Ros, Domaine de Chassorney, and Domaine Leroy.
750 mlGanko is a nickname that Olivier has acquired, but this one came from his Japanese importer. It means “stubborn,” which is a valuable trait for any outsider, especially making wine his own way in Rioja. Ganko comes from a site at 600 meters in elevation near Cárdenas in Rioja Alta. Olivier farms 60–90-year-old Garnacha and Mazuelo in sandy and ferrous, red clay soils. Olivier considers this wine to be his 1er Cru Village Rioja. There is a spicy (pepper) core of dark plums along with firm but very ripe tannins.
