From The Producer

“Japanese whisky. Maybe you've heard of it. Maybe you've heard that it's pretty bloomin' marvellous. Maybe you're excited that we've only gone and bottled our first whisky from Japan! Our Japanese Blended Whisky #1 has been hotly anticipated by Boutique-y fans and Boutique-y team members alike, and we reckon it was well worth the wait.”

Evan’s Tasting Note

Nose: Nutty, oxidized Sherry, polished wood furniture, orange rind, apple cider, raisins, dried cranberries, the lightest hint of peat, coriander, dried basil, rosemary, and peach tea.

Palate: Sherry notes, sweet malt and dusty grains, plus honey oat bars, butterscotch, Golden Delicious apples, more raisins, and milk chocolate.

Finish: Soft and easygoing with a light finish. Hints of sweet grains, roasted almonds and a touch of smoke and char stick around.

Comment: I had no idea what to expect with this bottle, but it is a refined and delicious blend. The grain whisky notes compliment the malt in the blend nicely without taking over, creating a delicious but delicate dram that seems to show maturity beyond the 21 years listed on the bottle.

Producer Tasting Note

Nose: Big oaty, cereal notes at first - there’s porridge drizzled with raspberry jam, malted milk biscuits and a rich creaminess.

Palate: Smooth with more of those cereal notes. There’s a honey sweetness and raspberry flavours but also underlying earthy flavours, with rhubarb too..

Finish: Vanilla notes, more of those earthy tones and a final burst of juicy blackberries.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company (TBWC) is part of the Atom Group, which also owns the UK retailer Master of Malt and a number of other subsidiaries. They are a dynamic and innovative firm, who by example invented the Whisky Advent Calendar concept. Established in 2012, TBWC is famous for its playful and colourful labels, which often feature prominent whisky industry figures, tell a story, and or elude to an inside joke. The labels are typically laced with hidden elements and "Easter Eggs."

TBWC bottles whiskies from around the world, though the bulk of their offerings are of Scottish origin. Most of their offerings are small-batch releases, Blended Malts, and Blends. Their "Head of Whisky" is Canadian Sam Simmons.

We are big fans of not only their whimsical labels but also the consistently high standard of liquid they bottle.
