Boutique-y Glentauchers Batch 8 21 Year

This item is archived.

Glentauchers is a KWM staff favourite, and a highly underappreciated malt. We've had good luck with previous Boutique-y bottlings of Glentauchers, and we don't expect this will be any different.

Producer Description: "Our eighth batch from the Glentauchers distillery is a 21 Year Old, a release of just 803 bottles at 47.1% abv."

About the Label (Larger Label Under the Tasting Note)

"They do things traditionally at Glentauchers. They haven't always been so suspicious of new technologies, however, as the scene on this label depicts… Glentauchers was a distillery that experimented with 'silent malt' at the beginning of the 20th century - that's malt whisky made in column stills. Revolutionary, eh? Unless, as it turned out to be the case, it's just not a 'thing'. Oops."

Andrew's Tasting Note

Nose: this one has breakfast all over it; Honey Nut Corn Flakes, mixed fruit bowl and banana pancakes; granola fried in honey, dried apple chunks and Five Alive.

Palate: lush, toasty and very fruity; more banana loaf than pancakes, though you must leave room for a little corn syrup; a mix of orchard fruits, melons and tangy berries; thick and almost waxy with vanilla and creamed honey; gentle oak spices.

Finish: light, fresh and fruity with a nice balance of sweet honey, spices and toasted oak.

Comment: this is everything we look for in a good Glentauchers, which is a greatly underappreciated malt; it is complex, elegant and dangerously drinkable with loads of fruit.

Producer Tasting Note

Nose: Lots of fruit on the nose - there’s pears, peaches, banana leaf and candied citrus too.

Palate: More delicious fruits fill the mouth with just a prickle of woody spice beneath.

Finish: A final juicy burst of fruit followed by a spicy, dry end.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company (TBWC) is part of the Atom Group, which also owns the UK retailer Master of Malt and a number of other subsidiaries. They are a dynamic and innovative firm, who by example invented the Whisky Advent Calendar concept. Established in 2012, TBWC is famous for its playful and colourful labels, which often feature prominent whisky industry figures, tell a story, and or elude to an inside joke. The labels are typically laced with hidden elements and "Easter Eggs."

TBWC bottles whiskies from around the world, though the bulk of their offerings are of Scottish origin. Most of their offerings are small-batch releases, Blended Malts, and Blends. Their "Head of Whisky" is Canadian Sam Simmons.

We are big fans of not only their whimsical labels but also the consistently high standard of liquid they bottle.
