Rottensteiner Muller Thurgau

A grape varietal with historic roots, Müller Thurgau traces back to German winemaking history while also forming an important part of South Tyrol's wine production. The unique alpine setting of Rottensteiner's vineyards above Bolzano provide the ideal climate to develop the aromatics and refreshing acidity that sets quality Müller Thurgau apart from the rest. After fermentation, the wine is matured in stainless steel tanks to accentuate its freshness and acidity.

This elegant-yet-quaffable white is delicate yet bracing, with bright floral aromatics and a hint of spice. These unique qualities make the wine best served to complement lighter fare, be it appetizers or delicate fish dinners.

The Rottensteiner family is one of the oldest families to have continually lived in southern Tyrol, with the family name being mentioned all the way back to the 1530s. The winery itself was founded in 1956 by the late Hans Rottensteiner, who originally started the winery to produce bulk wine for export to Switzerland. In the 80s, Hans’s son Toni Rottensteiner joined him after completing his studies of Oenology in Switzerland with a new perspective on how the business should go forward. This change included switching over to bottling the wines themselves instead of selling them in bulk out of the country. In 2001 Toni’s son, Hannes, joined the business to help with the winemaking process, this allowed Toni to also focus more on the Viniculture side of things with fewer distractions. Toni and Hannes’s motto for their wine is “A good wine must have elegance and drinkability” and this absolutely shows.

The Rottensteiner name is directly linked to the region itself, the soils of Alto-Adige tend to have a large amount of porphyry (A red/purple stone consisting of coarse-grained crystals). Their name comes from the German name for red rock (Roter, meaning Red, and Stein, meaning Rock). This is seen in a lot of their wines with the displaying terroir being one of their main goals, the minerality that is displayed makes this apparent.

The winemaking process itself is headed by Hannes, who has taken a leading role in bringing the winery into the new age while still maintaining tradition. This is shown in the winery with 50-year-old neutral oak barriques sitting next to temperature-controlled steel fermentation tanks. The push for modernization is something that some wineries may trip and stumble while pursuing the future, thanks to Hannes, Rottenstiener has accomplished it while staying true to their motto, “elegance and drinkability”.
