Now owned by spirits giant Pernod Ricard, Monkey 47 Gin is produced in Germany and uses an impressive 47 botanicals in its crafting. Bottled at 47% ABV.

"Doing things by hand is a matter of honour, which is why Monkey 47 contains only hand-picked ingredients. A number of them, including the peel of bitter oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, have to be fresh off the fruit when added to the macerate prior to distillation. This requires the helping hands of hard-working locals who are willing to report for duty at seven o’clock every morning. Following meticulous sensory inspection, each ingredient is distilled using well-honed artisanal techniques and the softest local spring water before being stored in traditional earthenware vessels for maturation. The production process is complicated, comprising a combination of maceration – that is, steeping herbal ingredients in a mixture of highly rectified, molasses-based ethyl alcohol and spring water – as well as distillation, percolation, and oxidation."

Better known for their whisky, Nikka has produced both vodka and gin for the Japanese market for years. The Nikka Coffey Gin, 47%, is their first export gin. The gin is produced from a blend of "rich" and "mellow" spirits in their Coffey still a Miyagikyo Distillery. It is created with traditional gin botanicals (juniper, angelica, coriander, lemon and orange peels), but also zesty and exotic "Japanese citruses: Yuzu, Kabosu, Amanatsu and Shequasar." There are also notes of apple and sansho pepper.

Nikka Coffey Gin's complexity is achieved through the perfect balance between 11 selected botanicals and the silky texture of Coffey distillates. The bright and zesty aroma originating from four kinds of Japanese citruses, Yuzu, Kabosu, Amanatsu and Shequasar, compliments the traditional gin botanicals of juniper berries, angelica, coriander seeds, lemon and orange peels.
There is also a touch of apples, a fruit deeply related to the history of Nikka, followed by pleasantly tangy hints of green Japanese Sansho pepper on the finish.
