Grunhaus Abstberg Spatlese

Grunhaus Abstberg Spatlese

$55.99

We have been lucky enough to get some wines from the legendary Maximin Grünhaus Estate in the Ruwer district of the Mosel.
The estate dates back to at least the year 966ad and is, by all measures, the oldest wine estate in Germany, pre-dating Schloss Johannisberg by about 200 years.  For the last five generations, it has been run by the Von Schubert family.  The current head of the family, Carl Von Schubert is handing the reins to his son as of this year.  The vineyard is incredibly special.  There are three distinct sections, all of which are on the same hillside by each other.  They are, Herrenberg, Abtsberg, and Bruderberg.
Maximin Grünhaus was a monastery, so the vineyards are named for the purpose their wine served:

Herrenberg was used for the choirmasters and is spread across 40 acres of weathered red slate.  Even though the Abtsberg is theoretically more prestigious, Herrenberg’s wines are no less compelling.  There is a style difference too owing to the red vs blue slate - Herrenberg is more opulent and fruity than Abtsberg, which is more slender and taut.

"Hint of mushroom here and spicy grapefruit freshness. Creamy and generous on the palate even with the purity of perfectly balanced acidity and residual sugar." Julia Harding MW
