This wine estate in Ayl has vineyards along the best steep slopes on the Saar. In addition to the famous Ayler Kupp, they cultivate two other important vineyards in the Mosel region: the Saar Feilser directly above the river and the steeply sloping vineyard Schonfels, a little farther upstream. Recently, they also replanted and recultivated the now forgotten Lambertskirch, just a stone’s throw from Schonfels.
These white wines have been among the best in the Saar for many years. Since 2013, they have been a member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates). The wines from VDP.GROSSEN LAGEN® in the dry and off-dry styles are particularly special.

In addition to the famous Ayler Kupp, they cultivate two other important vineyards in the Mosel region: the Saar Feilser, directly above the river, and the steeply sloping vineyard Schonfels, a little farther upstream. Feils is the vineyard name of one of the three Grand Cru dry wines that Florian Lauer produces – the other two are Kupp and Schonfels. (in German these are called “Grosses Gewächs, translating to “great growth”). Feils is a unique site for the Saar in a number of ways. Unlike the Mosel, where most of the great sites (at least historically speaking) cling to the river and benefit from the temperature control the river provides, in the Saar, most of the sites run perpendicular to the river. As such they are not so affected by the warmth the river generates. This site produces one of the most textural and luscious of the GGs; it displays a broad range of fruit and spice and tends to drink earlier than Lauer’s other GGs.

The Brudersberg monopoly site faces south throughout. The extreme steepness and the direct influence of the Rhine make the Brudersberg very special. Despite the omnipresent sunshine, the wines are not overly opulent, as some GG wines can be. Rather, they are characterized by a fine minerality, elegance and a very special longevity. In the glass, clear aromas of the terroir with flint and graphite, followed by lychee, apricot, lemon curd and peach notes. Very elegant and drinkable on the palate, bright acidity and a mineral-laden finish. Gorgeous riesling.

This estate dates back to 1815 and today they farm 20 hectares of vineyards. Riesling currently accounts for 85% of the vines, supplemented by Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc). Werner and Frank Schönleber have worked their way to the top of their profession. Germany's leading wine guides unanimously rate Weingut Emrich-Schönleber as a world-class winery. The Mineral is sourced from the younger vines of the Halenberg and Fruhlingsplatschen GG vinyards,and it offers an incredible value to Riesling lovers. Surprisingly saline whilst true to it's name, Mineral hews razor-blade like precision with hammer like slatey minerality buoyed by linear acidity (even in 2022). A wonderful showcase of all the terroirs of the Nahe.
