Previously dubbed the Johnnie Walker Platinum Label, this 18 year old was originally released globally in 2012. There are 14 to 16 malt and grain components in this Blended Scotch whisky, with Blair Athol, Glen Elgin, Mortlach and Cardhu doing the heavy lifting. Bottled at 43% ABV.

Producer Tasting Note

Nose: A wonderfully rich aroma, combining notes of rich, sweet fruit with hints of toffee and caramel.

Palate: A comforting mix of warming, malty cereal and smooth creamy vanilla, with fragrant notes of almond and tropical tangerine.

Finish: A lingering finish with hints of dark chocolate, citrus peel and a very light, aromatic smoke.

Johnnie Walker Black Label is at least 12 years old and is light and smokey in style. This iconic blend traces its origins back to 1870 when it was called Old Special Highland Whisky, renamed Johnny Walker Black Label in 1909. The second from entry level expression can be sipped neat of mixed. While the Black Label is comprised of between 35 and 40 individual components, there are five distilleries that are considered its main building blocks. These cornerstones are Talisker, Caol Ila, Cragganmore and Glenkinchie for the malt portion and Cameronbridge for the grain whisky.

Nose: Rich. Maple syrup, spices and mustard. Can a whisky have a hint of acidity on the nose? Yes, but rahter the acidity of a Lenny Bruce rather than of vinegar.

Palate: Marijuana. Big interplay of smoky dryness, spicy heat and sweetly malty, creamy vanilla.

Finish: Rounded with raisiny sherry. At length, mellow.

Globally launched in 2010 - the Double Black takes the concept of the original Johnnie Walker Black Label and amps up the smoke and richness. 40% ABV. On top of using a larger amount of younger whisky in the blend to give a more full and concentrated profile, the Caol Ila portion of the mix is apparently bumped up to a slightly larger percentage than what is in the regular Black Label. More heavily charred casks are also used to provide this bolder flavour profile.
