A rum from Guyana! "Nose: A smoky scent, almost like barbecue and heavy fuel, not as pungent as a Jamaican rum but very estery and so typical of British Navy style! Palate: Much sweeter and softer than the nose. Syrupy, but not cloying. Creamy, but also spicy: cinnamon, orange peel, black pepper. Vivid, honeyed and gentle at the same time. Finish: Still very creamy, with the spice going to the background. Oak, coffee, black chocolate, liquorice and aniseed," according to the Rum Nation team. Pair with dark chocolate. Rum Nation was started by an Italian winemaker who, after leaving Italy, also started Wilson and Morgan in Scotland.

"This was first produced in Santiago de Cuba over 130 years ago. It is aged using the Solera process, so on average the rums contained herein are 15 years old," according to Master of Malt. Thanks to the Cuban Revolution, it's no longer made in Cuba; it's now made in the Dominican Republic. A molasses-based rum, it's a dark-gold colour with delicious notes of vanilla, toasted sugar and banana.

Used to be blended, aged and distilled in Guatemala by Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala, the same company that distills Ron Zacapa and Ron Botran. Now, it's a blend of aged rums from Trinidad and Tobago, distilled by Angostura, Ltd. It's a dark brown rum distilled from fermented molasses, aged 12 years in used bourbon barrels. Look for notes of vanilla, chocolate and coffee in a rich body with a smoky oak flavor in the finish.

The Santa Teresa Hacienda in Venezuela started distilling in 1797. This rum was first launched in 1997 to celebrate its 200th anniversary. Santa Teresa is a dark rum made in a solera system which blends 8 to 12 year old rums. The palate has notes of honey, dark chocolate, maple syrup, caramel pecans and smoky wood with a smooth finish of coconut and slightly smoked ripe fruit. It finishes with great length, a touch of pepper and developing complexity.

This Demerara rum is a blend of rums aged to a minimum of 21 years, and up to 25 years. The nose is complex with subtle confectioned notes. The palate is warm, yet silky with gentle notes of tropical fruitl. The warmth of alcohol is supported by smooth oak notes allowing the tropical flavours to flourish. The finish is long and pleasant.
