Montsant (where the Coca i Fito brothers winery is situated), is a remarkably beautiful region with steep mountains that rise more than 3,300 feet above sea level. The climate is harsh: hot summers and bitter winters.The vines are planted directly on the steep hillsides, on what are called "costers" or terraces. This red wine from DO Montsant is crafted from carefully selected grapes of old vines, primarily grown on clay-limestone soils. Aged in oak barrels, the result is a wine with a marked identity—elegant, balanced, round, and smooth. It is a wine with character, filled with nuances, yet subtly refined. Fresh, fruity, and powerful, this is a wine to savour. A blend of 55% Red Grenache, 25% Carignan, and 20% Syrah .

Coca i Fitó of Monsant in Catalunya, Spain is a small family production operated by two brothers, Toni and Miquel Coca. The brothers grew up around vineyards and eventually started making their own wines in 2006 after years of working for other cellars. Their individual talents compliment each other: Toni makes vibrant and well-defined wines, while Miquel is a true artist for design and running a wine cellar, if you notice all of the labels from Coca i Fitó are wonderfully designed by Miquel.

Spain's Montsant region is home to Coca i Fitó, a winery located in the municipality of El Masroig, in the southernmost part of the region, with nearly 30 hectares of vineyards sprawling across various municipalities, with brothers Tony and Miquel Coca i Fitó crafting wines full of soul and identity from these distinct terroirs. Garnacha is king in these parts, and the rugged terroir of Montsant allows the grapes to reach their full potential, much as they can in areas like Châteauneuf-Du-Pape. They also grow a fair bit of carinyena (aka carignan) and syrah, another commonality with Châteauneuf-Du-Pape.

The review: "This blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah aged in concrete and demi-muid is a custom cuvée from importer Eric Solomon. Made from very old head-pruned vines that are not irrigated in pure slate soils, some of the vines are close to 100 years of age. This is really an amazing wine for the price. It is a fruit bomb, so those not wanting flavor, or in search of wimpy wines need to consider a light beer. Deep ruby/plum purple, with loads of blueberry and black currant fruit, underlying crushed rock notes and some floral scents are all present in this remarkable wine...These are the kind of wines I wish had existed when I was in college."

Owner & winemaker, Rosalia Molina, produces these organic wines in one of Spain's highest-altitude wineries. Her mission is to make wines that express the typicity of DO Manchuela, and this includes the vineyards, the altitude and the varieties planted. The climate pushes the limits for grape growing because, at 1,100 metres above sea level issues like frost become a concern. The grapes tend to experience a large diurnal range that encourages even ripening and helps to retain natural acidity. Rosalia's vineyards are certified organic, she uses only natural fertilizers, promoting biodiversity by welcoming chickens, sheep and pigs from local farms to roam the vineyards freely. Grapes are hand-harvested and vinified as naturally as possible with native yeasts and little other intervention. The wines are then aged in clay amphora and some in French oak to give texture and complexity.
This organic red blend is made up predominantly of Syrah, with some Cabernet Franc and Garnacha, dense and layered. One to enjoy now or cellar for a while. It spends 24 months in French oak as well.Ripe notes of black berries, blueberries, a touch of minerality and an expressive note of black pepper. A great wine to pair with a juicy steak, tourtiere and/or roasted root vegetables. Vegan friendly!
