Old Pulteney is the northernmost distillery in mainland Scotland, and was established in 1826 in the town of Wick (Pulteneytown). The distillery is one of only two in Scotland named after an individual, in this case Sir William Pulteney. William Pulteney had the town built on the bank of the River Wick to take advantage of the rich fishing grounds. At one point Wick was the Herring fishing capital of Europe.
