Protos Reserva

Protos Reserva

$59.99

Things start to get serious in this range. It's produced from south facing vineyards in the Burgos Province from 50-year-old vines and aged in French and American barrels for 18 months. It spends two years in bottle prior to release. There's some grip to this wine along with dark red fruits, spice and minerality, and ideal companion to roasted meats and game. Decanting is recommended.

Wine Spectator Tasting Note (2012 Vintage)

91 Points - "This red has focus and depth, in an austere style that remains balanced and fresh. Black cherry fruit lurks beneath espresso, licorice and black pepper flavors, supported by firm, well-integrated tannins and juicy acidity."

Winery Tasting Note (2012 Vintage)

Intense bright dark cherry color with garnet rim. Powerful, black fruits with nice toasty notes, spicy, creamy oak, complex and elegant. Powerful, flavorful, toasty, round tannins, good acidity, fruity and spicy. Good backbone and lingering finish.

Winery Pairing Suggestions

Pair with a variety of poultry, game and meat dishes.

Back in the before-times pre-Covid when parties and gatherings were a thing, we held a staff get-together afterward at an undisclosed location (Andrew's House). This may come as a shock, but wine, whisky, beer and good food are usually tasted and imbibed at events such as this. On one of these occasions, previous Store Manager Dave Tyler brought in a few bottles of Protos for us all to taste and see what we thought. The wines were a resounding success and we quickly went about sourcing some cases for our store shelves. Protos has come in and out of availability since then, but we do what we can to make sure to carry the wine of this Bodega whenever possible. It started as a staff favourite and quickly grew to be a customer favourite as well.

Bodegas Protos winery started in 1927 and was initially known as the Cooperatia de Pañafiel. It was a partnership that included 11 of the best winemakers in the region. The name “Protos” means “first” in Greek, and Protos was the first winery of Peñafiel, Spain.  In 1982 the Consejo Regulador (the Spanish wine regulatory authority) recognized the high-quality wine produced by Bodegas Protos and created the Ribera del Duero DO of Spain. Over the intervening years, Bodegas Protos has grown to 1600 hectares of property and produces barrel-aged 100% Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, 100% of the white grape Verdejo from Rueda and delicious Rosados from Cigales.
