Moss Wood Amy's Red Blend 2023

Moss Wood Amy's Red Blend 2023

$39.99

Amy's Red Blend from Moss Wood is a both customer and staff favourite at Kensington Wine Market. Vintage after vintage, this Bordeaux-style blend punches well above its price point. The 2023 vintage contains 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 6% Malbec, and 6% Petit Verdot.

Established in 1969, Moss Wood is an important, founding estate of the Margaret River wine region in the northern sub–region of Wilyabrup, Western Australia. Clare & Keith Mugford, as winemakers, viticulturalists & proprietors, have been making wine & tending the vineyard at Moss Wood since 1984 & 1979, respectively. Their exacting viticulture ensures the production of high-quality fruit, and they have created a stable of fine wines distinguished by their consistency over each vintage, along with their ability to age superbly.

They have put significant effort into developing an appropriate style for each of their wines, but Cabernet Sauvignon, their first wine, is still the primary focus. Naturally, they looked to the great wines of Bordeaux for inspiration and carefully examined the factors that have made Bordeaux the benchmark for Cabernet Sauvignon.

As they were making wine in Margaret River inspired by those of the Medoc, they felt it was important to consider the Bordeaux environment as opposed to Margaret River’s individualistic climate and terroir. Wine writer Jancis Robinson has called them the Chateau Latour of Australia, and, we might add, for a fraction of what Latour costs.

Winery Tasting Note (2023 Vintage)

Nose: Dominated by bright aromas of cherry chocolate, blueberry, blackberry, marshmallows and rose. In the back ground there are tarry and cedar notes and toasted oak.

Palate:  Carrying over from the nose the blueberries and red currants are immediately apparent. The firm tannin structure is accented nicely by the generosity contributed by the medium-full body of the mid-palate. The acidity has a gentle linearity which pairs nicely with the texture derived from the French Oak. The vibrancy and liveliness of the fruit weight make this wine very appealing and can be enjoyed while in its youth.

Tasting Note Ray Jordan of Ray Jordan Wine (2023 Vintage)

95 Points - "This is a blend if cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot, malbec and merlot. In a good year like this one, it offers some of the best value classy red wine going around. This is as good as any in this line. Plush red fruit of tremendous intensity. A firm core of tannin and oak holds it firm as the succulent fruit washes through. Such energy and vibrancy."
