The Raats family makes only two wines and they are both exceptional: Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. This extremely well priced Chenin Blanc has won 4 stars from John Platter, South Africa's top wine guy. It's packed with succulent flavors of pineapple, golden delicious apple and citrus, with hints of ginger, honeysuckle, orange blossom and a lovely minerality. Fabulous with freshly prepared shellfish.

Chenin Blanc is the Cape’s signature variety, and the Mulderbosch winery has the largest planting of this variety in the world — the grape has been grown at Mulderbosch since the 1600s. Look for fruity aromas typical to the variety: mango, papaya and ripe grapefruit, while a subtle oak character lends depth to the profile. The taste is of tangy acidity leading into to a succulent and weighty mouthful. Enjoy with shellfish; grilled tuna; grilled sardines, lemon and herb roast chicken.

The review: "The 2012 Sauvignon Blanc is blended with 8% Semillon and sees extended lees contact in barrel. It has plenty of green pepper, nettle and asparagus scents on the nose that has plenty of personality too. The palate is well-balanced with gooseberry and asparagus on the entry, a fine line of acidity and a slightly phenolic finish that just needs a little more tension. Otherwise, this is a fine Sauvignon Blanc. Drink now."
