Moss Wood Semillon 2023

Moss Wood Semillon 2023

$42.99

Semillon is a quirky white grape that is primarily known for use in Bordeaux white wine, where it is blended with Sauvignon Blanc. This bottle from Moss Wood and other 100% Semillon wines drink quite nicely when young, but also quietly have tremendous aging potential. Whether you buy a bottle to drink now, or pick up a few to cellar, you will be happy with your purchase.

More than 45 years ago, back in 1977 was the first year that Moss Wood produced a Semillon for commercial use.  It was made with no barrel treatment and upon the first year of production was a major head turner. To this day, Moss Wood sticks to only stainless still fermentation for their Semillon.

Producer Tasting Note (2023 Vintage)

Nose: Lifted fruit aromas and distinctly fragrant, more so than usual.  It certainly shows traditional Semillon characters of fig, apple and lemon but has added dimensions of quince, pear and peach.  There is a complexity of lanolin, mushroom and malt biscuits, although this sits in the background for the moment, behind a wall of fruit.

Palate: This continues the fruit depth theme of the ’23 vintage, with bright fig, pear, granny smith apple and citrus flavours, combining with fresh acidity and full body to give length and generosity.  The other feature of 2023 is well balanced tannins, giving the wine a firm but smooth finish.

Cellaring: We suspect the 2023 Moss Wood Semillon will represent a challenge.  It’s such a gorgeous young wine, it can be enjoyed immediately and we are happy to encourage those who like bright young wines to do so.  However, for those with patience, it will last decades in the cellar and we recommend at least 10 years to allow the wine to develop some bottle bouquet.  Even then it will still be an awkward teenager and will need at least a further 10 years to show its true class.

Tasting Note from Gary Walsh of The Wine Front (2023 Vintage)

94 Points - "Gee, they’ve turned out an excellent Semillon in 2023. No oak employed here.
Ripe green apple, quince, lime leaf, citrus blossom, a little spice and jalapeño. It’s flavoursome, but balanced, with a fine grip, green melon and citrus, arrowroot biscuits, and a bright and long finish offering lime zest and some exotic tropical fruits, maybe yellow kiwi fruit or something like that. It’s a delight, and sure, a bolder expression of Semillon, but with excellent balance and intensity of fruit. I think one of the best releases of this wine for some time."
