Georges Laval Les Chenes Champagne

$437.99

This tiny, impeccably-run estate in Cumières is known only to a select few connoisseurs of Champagne. You could drive through the village a hundred times without knowing it was there, and in fact, aside from a well-worn, barely legible placard with the words “Champagne Georges Laval” written in about three millimeter-high script just above the doorbell, there is no marking whatsoever to indicate its presence. Behind these simple, unassuming wooden doors, however, lies one of Champagne’s greatest treasures. Over four generations, Georges Laval began producing estate-bottled champagne in 1971. His son Vincent joined the estate after finishing his studies in 1991, and has been in charge of the cellars since 1996. Laval’s vineyard holdings comprise just 2.5 hectares, with two hectares all in the premier cru village of Cumières, spread over seven parcels. Average vine age is over 30 years, and the oldest vines of the estate are over 70 years of age. Rare and remarkable

This vintage is crafted from Chardonnay and follows a vinification faithful to the Laval family style, with spontaneous fermentation and vinification and maturation in Burgundian oak barrels for around ten months. After tirage, the wine undergoes more than 36 months of lees ageing before dégorgement, developing complexity and precision without losing energy or verticality. Without final dosage, in Brut Nature style, this interpretation highlights the purity of the fruit, the saline texture of the terroir, and a particularly sharp and refined palate definition.

In tasting, Les Chênes Millésime 2022 reveals a bright pale golden colour and a fine, persistent mousse. The aromatic profile recalls fresh citrus, green apple, white flowers, and delicate hints of brioche and subtle spices, supported by a pronounced chalky minerality. On the palate it delivers tension, precision, and remarkable mineral drive, with a refined balance between acidity and texture leading to a savoury, persistent, and elegant finish that underlines the significant ageing potential of this cuvée
