Vienna’s Gemischter Satz is one of only 300 products worldwide that SlowFood awarded its Ark of Taste award, created to protect high-quality and traditionally produced foods for future generations in the face of industrialized agriculture and big business. The Zahel family was the first to ever bottle Gemischter Satz, capturing the spirit of Vienna’s local wine taverns (Heurigers) which began when Emperor Joseph II's ordinance of 1784 allowed Austrians to sell home-made food, wine, and the convivial spirit of Viennese Gemütlichkeit (warmth, friendliness, and good cheer).
750 mlThe new Alexander Zahel Grüner Veltliner Alte Reben (Old Vines) comes from Retzer Land, a small designated area about 1 hour north of Vienna in the Niederösterreich growing area (aka Lower Austria which is located in the northeastern area of Austria). The soil in this area is mix of sandstone and granite with limestone topsoil perfect for developing a unique mineral character in the resulting wines. Biodynamic Grüner Veltliner was hand harvested from 45-year-old vines at the end of August to maintain a crisp acidity. Whole bunch pressing and spontaneous fermentation in 1200 ltr. Stockinger barrels (more on that below!) and 6 months on the fine lees. The wine received minimal sulfuring and no filtration or fining before bottling. Certified Bio, Demeter Certified and Regenerative Organic Certified. The bouquet is vibrant and fresh with aromas of apple and citrus fruit paired with classic Grüner notes of white pepper. On the palate, it is bone dry with crisp acidity and elegant yellow fruit and spice notes. The lingering finish is crisp and mineral driven.
