700 mlAndrew's Tasting Note
Nose: malty, honeyed, and herbal with subtle peat and a bit of cheesy funk; sliced green apple with Isle of Mull cheddar on a buttery oatcake; fried sage leaves with creamy mushroom risotto; a touch of citrus with Billy Bee liquid honey.
Palate: ashy, malty, and maritime with faint honey, orchard fruits, and toasted oak; bright citrus notes and crisp green apple; the latter on an oatcake with a sharp cheddar; more fried sage leaves on creamy mushroom risotto; the funk here is more of the earthy mushroom sort than the lactic kind; building soft clean peat smoke with a trace of runny honey; nutty and herbal; the palate is ever juicer with time.
Finish: medium long, the clean Orcadian peat lingers longest with traces of honey, citrus, and sage.
Comment: on the surface this is a rather naked Highland Park, but none the worse for it; with time it develops and builds; this is the Shrek of Highland Park's, in that like an Ogre, and onions, it has layers; the longer you sit with it, the more you peel them back, the more you get; it is ever more juicy, honeyed, and delicately peated with each successive sip.
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: a beautiful peated spirit, gently aged for 18 years in refill wood - perfect! Charred hazelnuts, dusty peated malt/grist, burnt sage, rosemary, oily fishing ropes, tar and creels. Crushed seashells and heather smoke. Touches of fruits - quince and apple peel.
Palate: at 48.5% it delivers! Very powerful with sharp citrus, heather honey, stewed apples, minerality - salt and wet slate. Some smoked ham, anchovies and capers in brine. Malty, salty and moreish.
Finish: salty peanut brittle, the peat stays - and is powerful —quite earthy and robust - with lingering cigar smoke.

We are on always on the hunt for value, and a 27 year old Glen Garioch at 49.3% for just a tad over $300 fits the bill! This 1998 vintage Glen Garioch was supposedly matured in an oloroso sherry cask, but when the chaps at Thompson Bros. nosed it, they were pretty confident it was actually a Fino Sherry cask. Based on references in the tasting note, they might be right. Exclusive to KWM in Canada!

"We recently received a butt of Glen Garioch 1998, purchased blind based on the outstanding quality of previous casks from this vintage and with confidence, as the purchase order specified a 1st fill sherry butt. However, upon arrival and during our routine sensory analysis (someone's gotta do it), it became immediately apparent from visual assessment that this was not typical of 1st fill oloroso or px sherry, as we had initially expected. Instead, the spirit presented pronounced saline notes, followed by chamomile and fresh bread dough - characteristics that strongly suggest this cask is, in fact, a 1st fill fino sherry butt. We are now highly confident in that conclusion. the combination of distillate, time and oak interplay beautifully here. The nature of buying blind can be a bit risky, but very often those risks pay off in very interesting ways."
