G&M CRN57 The Cairn 57 Year

$7,199.99

This 57 year old "Blended Malt" is part of a range of whiskies released by Gordon & MacPhail to highlight what they are doing at The Cairn Distillery. The distillery's own whiskies won't be ready for some time, but in the interim they have created bottlings to show what the spirit might be like in 12, 18, 25, 30, 40, 57, and 70 years. The Cairn Distillery sits at 57 degrees north latitude-wise, hence the name CRN57 for these releases. 43.1%

Producer Description

"The Cairn Distillery sits at 57 degrees north of the equator in the Cairngorms National Park, inspiring the name of our range of blended Scotch whiskies. Each has been created to provide a taste of the future, replicating the aromas that may be found in the single malts released in decades to come.

"Our ‘57’ delivers spicy characteristics of cracked black pepper, roasted coffee bean and dried tobacco. There are also delicious notes of zesty orange, butterscotch and vibrant citrus. This very special whisky represents not only where we have come from but where we are going."

Andrew's Tasting Note

Nose: fresh, nutty, and decadent, with an unsurprisingly ancient feel; that seems a bit trite or redundant but G&M has a knack for maturing things to great age without them feeling over the hill; mincemeat pie, browning apple, and old Armagnac; candied fruits, Turkish Delight, and Manuka honey; a touch waxy with cool mint; faintly tropical.

Palate: rich, fruity, and dark, it is still rather fresh and lively while simultaneously antique and old-school; there is a minty-herbal note, with a touch of Fernet;  soft leather and tobacco; rather grape-y, with notes of both old Armagnac and Cognac; the Manuka honey is still there, as it the promise of tropical fruits, which seem restrained by the oak; dark chocolate and soft earthy tannins, and delicate spic; late notes of French roast coffee beans.

Finish: long, coating, and complex; a fine mix of sherry, fruits (both grapes and tropical), leather, and chocolate.

Comment: this is a lovely old malt, fresh, lively, and far from over the hill; I feel it had more to tell me than my wee sample and time allowed... if only it weren't so easy drinking, I may have had mmore to say!

Producer Tasting Note

91pts Whisky Fun

"Not sure of the composition here, but I believe Glen Grant is involved, which is often the case with G&M and such ages… Colour: bright amber. Nose: gah, stunning! One of those aromas that is just riddled with pure honeycomb and myriad exotic hardwood resins and spices. Add in cloves, quince jelly, beautiful wee flower honeys, ancient sauternes and some extremely old Fins Bois cognac. It's also full of dark fruits stewed in brandy and syrups - verging on some very fine, whisky-soaked Christmas cake. Exquisite ancient sherry that remains vibrantly fruity and extremely refined. Now, as ever with such old glories, the palate can tell a different story… Mouth: beautiful arrival, a majestic mixture of waxes and honeys, pure honeycomb, spiced ruby ales, dark chocolate with sea salt and then praline and roasted hazelnut. It's this vivid waxy / honey combination that is so impressive, in time it also displays an aspect that recalls some very old Burgundian pinot noir with these beautifully subtle gamey and earthy qualities. Finish: good length, back on medicinal herbs, honeys, exotic hardwood spices and resins, beautifully intricate earthy notes and a stunning fusion of umami and rancio in the aftertaste. Comments: yet more ancient glory from G&Ms warehouses. Ordinarily this age and ABV and cask type would ring alert bells, or just simply be a tad tired, but this isn't the case at all here, it still retains a wonderful freshness and length in the mouth which holds up to the stunning nose very well. It's just all a bit too drinkable, which is the main issue I feel (burp!) SGP: 651 - 91 points."
