This limited edition NIkka Blend has been released to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of From the Barrel. The whisky is from a batch of From the Barrel, further matured for up to 6 months after marrying. Bottled at 51.4%.

"To commemorate the 40th anniversary of From the Barrel's debut, Nikka is releasing a limited edition "From the Barrel Extra Marriage." This expression features double the marriage time —up to 6 months of marrying in oak—resulting in a whisky with richer flavor and a longer finish. The secret behind its gorgeous flavor is the unique combination of complex blending, higher ABV 51.4% and secondary aging process known as "marriage.
"The complex formula is created by blending more than 100 different batches of malt and grain whiskies. After blending, the whisky is filled into used barrels and matured for up to 6 more months. This "marriage" process harmonizes all components in the formula, resulting in a mellow taste."

Producer Tasting Note
Nose: Soft and mellow oak aroma. Rich chocolate, ripe fruit and vanilla sweetness, refreshing orange peel, and malt sweetness.
Palate: Rich and full-bodied. Bold flavors with a smooth, mellow texture and fine oak tannins.
Finish: Mild barrel aroma, woody and bitter aftertaste. Gentle oak aroma with a subtle bitterness on the long finish.

"This special 3-bottle set celebrates 40 years of Nikka From the Barrel by featuring the two non-chill-filtered cask-strength components, the Grain Pieces of the Barrel and Malt Pieces of the Barrel, alongside the final "Extra Marriage" blend. The Malt offers a rich, structured character with notes of ripe apricot, sweet vanilla, and mellow peat, while the Grain is sweet and smooth, with hints of banana and bitter-sweet marmalade. The Extra Marriage is a rich and full-bodied whisky with complex layers of chocolate, orange peel, and mellow oak tannins, culminating in a long, gently bitter finish."

The base of the whisky, Japanese single malts and grain, have been matured in American oak casks. The dressing is the more rare and complex Sherry and Mizunara (Japanese oak) notes. The single malts have been sourced from Hakushu and Yamazaki and the grain whiskies from Chita. This is the first Suntory whisky made available in Canada in more than 2 years.
Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: clean, floral and grainy with a touch of juicy malt; delicate fruits, melon and kiwi with lots of vanilla and subtle spices.
Palate: juicy, fruity and floral with toasty American oak and rich spices (Mizunara?); lots of fruits here, more melon and kiwi, silky grains and chewy malt mingle with orange peel and vanilla bean.
Finish: long, toasty and silky with fading fruits, spices and sugars.
Comment: Japanese blends never seem to disappoint, and this one is no exception. It is very elegant and complex. Hopefully we get more than promissed...
Distiller's Tasting Note
Nose: rose, lychee, hint of rosemary, mature woodiness, sandalwood.
Palate: honeylike sweetness, candied orange peel, white chocolate.
Finish: subtle, tender long finish, with hint of Mizunara (Japanese oak).

This is the newly reformulated Taketsuru Pure Malt, launched in 2020, to comply with Japan's new whisky regulations. Still predominantly made from Miyagikyo, with a prominent sherry cask influence, they have upped the presence of Yoichi single malt adding additional smoke to the mix.

Note: Nikka's own website notes that this bottle does not meet the criteria to be called a Japanese Whisky. The good news is that might mean it also contain Ben Nevis Single Malt, as Scotland's Ben Nevis Distillery is also owned by Nikka.
Nikka's venerated from the Barrel has been a staple of our whisky shelves for years and will hopefully remain so. This creation from Nikka is a blend of grain and malt from multiple distilleries owned by the company. It is always bottled at 51.4% ABV after the components are married in refill casks for up to half a year to marry together and become a cohesive whole.
