Torlesse takes it's name from an early Canterbury resident, surveyor and farmer, Englishman Charles Torlesse. He gave his name to the Torlesse mountain range which part circles the Canterbury Plains and was at one time the largest land owner and farmer in North Canterbury and founder of the nearby town of Rangiora. Interestingly, the name Torlesse is given to the underlying bedrock from which most New Zealand soils are derived.

This is one terrific buy! Viña Mayu was established in 2005, branching off from the Elqui Valley’s first fine wine producer that started up in 1998. Mauro Olivier was one of the pioneers, planting vines for fine wine production and sourcing grapes from different vineyards in the valley. He started working in his family's vineyards at a young age and spent some time working in Pisco production (the national Chilean spirit, made from white wine). In 2000, he planted the first Carménère and Syrah vines in the valley. Five years later, in 2005, he decided it was time to embark on his own wine project, creating the Mayu label. Mayu is an ancient INCA name for the Milky Way, literally meaning "creek of stars." Mayu's Sauvignon Blanc is an intensely aromatic dry white wine with ripe gooseberry, citrus and apple fruit flavours with crisp acidity. It's best served with white fish and shellfish, and can also be enjoyed as a refreshing aperitif. This Sauvignon Blanc shows an opulent character, nice fruit expression, length and complexity..
