Oban has long been one of the most recognizable yet underrepresented distilleries in Scotland. The distillate is ridiculously good, but the range of available expressions has been severely lacking. And indie versions? Fuhgeddaboudid. Needless to say, this is high on our list of things marked as 'must try.'

Producer Tasting Note
Appearance: Deep amber, with coppery lights. Very fine beading and good legs.
Nose: A mellow nose in feel, and quite vivid. The immediate impression is fresh and ‘maritime’ with hints of clean sea air, crystal salt and edible seaweed, but this is soon replaced by light oak and vanilla notes, then a hint of dried mixed herbs mingling with sherried, light fruity notes, together suggesting a summer walk through a Sicilian lemon grove by the sea. All this is supported by a very faint thread of smoke at the base, which becomes oilier if water is added.
Body: Medium.
Palate: An appealingly thick and creamy smooth texture introduces a roundly fruity and sweet taste, with hints of orange and lemon, a touch of creamy vanilla, a pinch of sea- side salt and a whisper of gently peppery, oaky spice. A dash of water gently rounds these tastes without altering them. Finish: Of medium length, ending in that smooth, warm spice. It is still spicy with a dash of water, which introduces more spice and dries the aftertaste.

The inaugural Roseisle 12-year-old was a highlight of last year's Diageo Special Releases. In terms of flavour profile, it sits comfortably in the 'safe zone,' but in terms of execution, it offers a fair bit more than a typical Speysider in this age bracket. We've been anxiously awaiting the arrival of additional expressions from this distillery ever since. And while it would be nice to have something a little more exotic than a second version of essentially the same whisky (same age and cask makeup), it's also a great opportunity to see how consistent we can expect Roseisle to be.

The 2024 Diageo Special Releases bottling of Lagavulin is a 12 year, matured in First-Fill ex-Bourbon and Refill Casks before bottling at 57.4%. Much better. Last year's Tequila-finished release was... let's just say we prefer this cask makeup.

Oban 14 is a touchstone malt. One that sits on most backbars across the country. It's rather singular profile makes it a restaurant favorite, in fact, and it's silky, salty and slightly peaty profile make it a complimentary malt to most food styles. Ask most any whisky fan what their gateway dram was and you're almost certain to hear this one crop up in the first few whiskies mentioned. There's good reason for that. Oban's malty, cereal-driven, and faintly peaty profile has just enough fruity sweetness underlying (and even a wee creamy top note!) that it is able to seduce ridiculously broad audiences through its sheer approachability. More defining than any of the afore-mentioned characteristics, though, is the coastal influence that permeates every bottle of Oban. That slightly saline character puts this in a special category that only a handful of Scotland's malts fit into.
Oban 14 is a part of Diageo's Classic Malts series for good reason. You may find it safe, but there's no way you won't find it utterly satisfying. 43% abv

Oban's first no age statement release impressed us a lot more than we feared it would. Maturing stocks of Oban have been finished in small casks to speed up the maturation process, likely in a similar manner to Laprhroaig's Quarter cask.
Producer’s Tasting Note: “A dense and coating mouth feel- sometimes sugary and slightly minty- with a warming, comforting sweet chewiness of a richly fruited malt loaf. Occasional hints of orange zest and clove, before growing drier, again slightly minty, with hints of green apple.”
Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: very fruity, Jujubes, and Wine Gums, a touch of salt and faint clean smoke; some caramel and spice with soft toasty oak.
Palate: more smooth caramel, lots of toasty, grainy oak, with salt and more clean smoke; the Wine Gums and Jujubes are there with big spices and chewy malt.
Finish: long with salt, smoke and malt.
Comment: much more satisfying and interesting than expected.
