Anselmo Mendes is recognised not only for the excellence of the wines he produces but also for the surprising and consistent way he innovates. Combining the use of age-old techniques, such as fermentation on skins, with bold winemaking methods such as the fermentation of Alvarinho in oak casks, he is established in Portugal and abroad with an original design and his own identity. Anselmo Mendes wines are the result of a long, faithful connection to the land, an experimentalist and studious spirit and a philosophy of respect for the ecosystem that translates into methods of integrated production. He is widely regarded as the best producer of white wines in Portugal.
750 mlContacto is Mendes' most famous wine, made from handpicked grapes sorted into small boxes and carried to the winery as quickly as possible. Total de-stemming is done with a short skin maceration, making it a near-orange wine. It spends a minimum of 3 months ageing on fine lees with regular bâtonnage. The wine has become so respected that the Symington Group (owners of Graham's, Dow's, Warre's, and Cockburn's Ports) bought in, which is why the label now bears their name as well. There is a high, aromatic concentration with floral notes and mineral nuances. The elegant mouth feel is backed by lively acidity followed by minerality and citrus bitters with nice intensity. Wet stone, lime and salinity notes round out the package. Brilliant stuff. A KWM exclusive!
