Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: deep, dark, and enticing with rich sugars, fruits, and spice: treacle sauce, burnt brown sugar, and espresso dregs with Demerara sugar; stewed prunes, grilled prosciutto wrapped dates, and dark chocolate acai and blueberry; sauteed strawberries with a balsamic reduction; cloves, fennel, and star anise.
Palate: big, dark, and opulent, with more rich sugars, fruits, and spice; this is wild, almost over the top; more treacle, burnt brown sugar, and Demera in espresso dregs; loads of dark fruits, raisins, dates, figs, acai, and blueberries; loads of chocolate, mostly in the dark range; maple syrup, firm new leather, and Dominican cigar tobacco; the spices have a bigger impact here, candied fennel, cinnamon hearts, and cloves plucked from a honey baked ham; beer nuts and sauteed strawberries drizzled in a balsemic reduction.
Finish: long, coating, and sweet, the rich fruits, spices, and sugars keep coming in long lingering waves.
Comment: good lord this is a beast, almost but not quite over cooked... it is so rich, decadent, and wild, it seems like it is going to go off the rails... but it never does; one of the best Kavalans, and certainly the oldest I have ever had!
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: Sweet dark caramel with hints of silky chocolate, burnt brown sugar, dark red fruits and honeycombs.
Palate: Rich dark fruitiness blended with chocolate, warm honey and sweet PX sherry characters creating both a complex and mellow finish.

“Vinho is fully matured in used American oak wine barrels that have been toasted and recharred in a way that brings out fruity vanilla notes from the wood into the whisky overlaid on a delicate background of complex fruitiness. It has a complex and multi-dimensional background of pepper, spice, dates and other fruits, such as ripe melon and mango together with kiwi and a delicate blend of bursting citrus fruits."
