The Port Askaig 17, and Cask Strength, are the first new whiskies we have seen in this range in a couple of years. Bottled at 50.5% from a parcel of undisclosed Islay single malt matured in ex-Bourbon casks. Very good chance this is Caol Ila... but we'll have to taste it to be sure! 87.55pts Whiskybase
700 mlEvan’s Tasting Note
Nose: Like you are cooking bacon in a cast iron skillet over a driftwood-fuelled campfire that you built between craggy rocks that are just up the beach enough to be sheltered from the tide. The nose is full of that smoke intermingled with salty coastal spray, along with lemon wedges squeezed on shellfish, dried seaweed flakes, crisp malt, and oh so much more.
Palate: Juicy and full of roasted malt and amber beer notes up front, then the tide of peat and brine comes rolling in, carrying sweet and succulent grilled prawns, pear juice, lemon meringue pie, and chamomile tea with a dash of honey.
Finish: Surprisingly clean and refreshing for a peaty dram. The smoke is there along with the coastal brine and orchard fruit notes, but it is all surprisingly gentle and welcoming.
Comment: Time for another sip? What a dram – full of fervour on the nose yet poised on the palate. An incredibly well put together Islay malt.

This is the oldest Caol Ila cask we have ever had the privilege of bottling. Distilled in 2002, the whisky was matured 22 years in a First Fill ex-Bourbon Barrel, Cask No. 8384, before bottling at 55.2%. 177 total bottles!

This 18 year old Islay from Berry's "Single Cask Collection: Crafted in Cask" range was initially filled into a sherry butt in 2007, and was finished in a PX Sherry Cask before bottling at 56%. We have no idea which distillery this is from, but the price is good, and it has good reviews! Only 36 bottles coming exclusively to KWM. 88.64pts Whiskybase

Bottled at 45.8%, after maturing in Refill American Oak Hogsheads, this 28 year old Mystery Islay Single Malt scored 90pts with @WhiskyFun. While the blogosphere seems to think this is Caol Ila, we were told by the bottler they strongly believed it to be Laphroaig. Curious, but either way it is an amazingly good old Islay Single Malt Scotch at a stellar price!
