This is best we can tell a first for Canada, a single cask Cognac bottled (unusual in itself) exclusively for a single shop. This 1992 vintage Chateau Montifaud has been bottled from a single cask, #92, exclusively for Kensington Wine Market to help us mark our 25th Anniversary. Bottled at 40%, only 60 bottles available. It is an excellent cognac, we can't take any credit for that though, we trusted that Montifaud would do right by us, and they have!
Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: floral, perfumed and very fruity; there is a delicate chalky note, hints of a botanical garden in bloom and bright citrus notes: sweet orange and lemon drops; decadent, soft and smooth.
Palate: the palate is very fruity with tobacco and dark fruits; still soft, smooth and floral as the nose implied, it is less perfumed and more spicy with dried dark fruits; the bright citrus notes hang on with wild berries, crisp ginger candies and sweet vanillans.
Finish: long, rich, warming and fruity with fading spices, sweet tobacco and more bright citrus; it is silky and elegant.
Comment: beautiful balanced with both a feminine delicacy and a bolder more masculine edge; lots of layers and complexity; tasty stuff, very proud of this one!
About Chateau Montifaud: "The Château Montifaud has belonged to the Vallet family for six generations now. The vineyard was created in 1837 by Augustin and has seen the succession of Pierre, Maurice, Louis and Michel. Laurent came to join his father and grandfather in October 2000. According to the family tradition, when a son joins his father, a part of the cognac distilled in that year is set preciously aside and will only be sold by the future generations. Thus it is that in the darkness of our “Paradise” cellar lie bottles of Cognac skilfully made by Pierre and Maurice Vallet. Our family cellars have also seen the ageing of cognacs that date from 1920 to the persent day, part of which, in vintage years, has been sealed by the B.N.I.C (the National Interprofessional Office of Cognac).
"Our vineyard stretches over 90 hectares in the two premier regions of cognac area: In the “Grande” and “Petite Champagne” whole soil contains a very great amount of active limestone (see photo, opposite : a cross-section of the land from our Petite Champagne vineyard). This chalky content plays a dominating role in quality of our Eaux de Vie (spirits, cognacs). Thanks to this exceptional land, Château Montifaud possesses an extremely high potential for quality. During each of the different phases of making our cognacs (producing, distilling, ageing), we apply our traditional craftsmanship and skill handed down from father to son. These allow us to enhance the natural qualities of our Eaux de Vie : the floral touches, the delicacy and elegance to the nose, the roundness, the suppleness and the long-lasting taste in the mouth."
