"Dark ruby-purple. A very perfumed nose of violets and gravel with a whiff of charcuterie on the backend. Smells exactly like a cool-climate Syrah from a warmer year. And indeed it is! Medium to medium-full bodied, the wine enters with a beautiful silken texture and savory flavors of earth and cured meats before fine-grained tannins emerge in the lengthy finish. A wine of harmony and poise. This can be enjoyed now but should continue to gain additional nuance with age."

Eschewing a job in software development and the city hustle & bustle in favour of making wine in their garage, the Carlisle husband-and-wife team of Mike and Kendall Officer has been making wine under the Carlisle Winery name since 1998. From these humble beginnings, Carlisle Winery & Vineyards has become a Sonoma County gem, producing genuine world-class wines.
Largely specializing in old-vine, vineyard-specific Zinfandels and red Rhone varietals. Carlisle wines are bold and assertive yet impeccably balanced. Differences between vintages and vineyards showcase the deviances amongst Sonoma terroir, which is further expressed by Carlisle's ethos of minimal intervention. Expect impeccable, nuanced wines at an outstanding price.
Carlisle's Estate Vineyard was planted in 1927 and features a field blend of 40 different varietals with Zinfandel being predominant. Mike does no advertising and sells his wine through a mailing list that is over-subscribed. The real advertising is through word of mouth (literally) as his wine’s reputation of affordability and value for such unparalleled quality have sold themselves.
Carlisle produces approximately 9,000 cases annually and does not want to increase from this level. With very few retail shops carrying Carlisle products, if you find it that is enough reason to purchase.

Second-generation winemaker Johannes Davaz isn't from Tavernelle. Originally, he worked for his father in the family's Swiss vineyards and wine cellar before going to college to study enology. Years later, when the Davaz family took over the Poggio al Sole estate, Johannes (known locally as "Giovanni") undertook the responsibility of overseeing the new venture. This Syrah is a great expression of a Super-Tuscan-like wine. It's a beautiful and sophisticated Syrah with just a nip of white pepper and a smoky finish. We recommend sipping on this wine with cheese and long evening talks. Organic and vegan friendly.

Winemaker’s Notes: "Less overtly fruity than Jack Robert’s Run, slower to open and overall a very different expression of Syrah. This is another wine of site and soil rather than Californian sun-filled fruit – so ultimately a far more complex experience than 99% of domestic Syrah. The deep red, iron-rich, highly-eroded mountain soils bring a rarely-matched complexity to this wine, but one that typifies many of the world’s greatest red wine vineyards. We don’t fully understand the reason, but the high iron oxide content allows for very special red grapes, full of complex terroir signatures. The shallow, steep hillside soils, also high in silica/quartz, contribute admirable freshness to the wine, so that while it’s dense, deep and rich, it’s never clumsy or overbearing, and the moderate alcohol level (14.34%) is easily held in check. You can age this vintage for many years and it will always give pleasure. The balsamic reduction notes will become more prominent with age as the fresh fruit fades, but this is a beautifully constructed Syrah and one of our finest ever Eddie’s Patch offerings. In my mind on a par quality-wise with the gorgeous 2009.
Deep blueberry, blackberry and dark cherry fruit with bay laurel, pine needle, menthol and a resonant balsamic note. The aromas directly translate to flavors. Wintergreen complexity, charcoal and a strong volcanic iron quality. Dark core of rich, full fruit. Walnut sweetness with dried herb freshness. Weighty and concentrated but wonderfully energetic. Plum skin tanginess on the mouth filling finish. There’s long term aging potential here.

Cornas is the warmest of the northern Rhone appellations with steep slopes that allow the vines to suck up the sunshine while enjoying shelter from the wind. As such Syrah ripens more easily here than anywhere else in the Northern Rhone. The appellation is effectively a massive slab of granite, and the stone contributes a minerality to the wines. The 2017 Cornas has a rich, powerful, chewy style as well as notes of blackberries, blueberries, graphite, toasted spices, and licorice. It's rich, with some oak to integrate, but offers full body and ripe tannins
